The Department of Dental Surgery, Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe was established in 20th February 2000, with the employment of the pioneer Consultant Dental Surgery and Head of Department. However, prior to this the dental Surgery service was solely administered by the Consultant in the Department but with the increase in number of senior staff the department is administed by various unit in charge to complement the work of the Head of department From the time of the establishment of the department to date, it has witnessed tremendous progress of achievement in both staffing and equipment. The department is rich with three (3) Consultants, (10) Registrars, (1) medical officer, and (1) supernumerary Registrar. We have also grown judged by the clinical services we rendered such as general Dental Surgery Services, maxillofacial services, Cleft care. Others are regional blocks, Pain management, Resuscitation/emergency services, Dental clinic and Intensive Care management. We have also trained about (30) house officer doctors in our department,more than (200) student Dental Therapist/Technology on SIWESS programme. The department had been Accredited by West African College of Surgeon ( Partial accreditation) for postgraduate training in maxillofacial surgery.we are awaiting for the renewal /full accreditation soon. The department is also responsible for training the hospital staff on Basic Life Support.
